About the artist...
“My art is an interpretation of my thoughts and emotions and a reaction to my surroundings.”
Kay Zetlmaier’s love of textures and rich patterns are exemplified by her abstract paintings. Her canvases combine a duality of structure and fragility, often informed by old architecture, earth’s natural elements and facets of humankind. Her many-layered process incorporates oil paint and cold wax using various non-conventional applications. Scraping, additions and reductions, stenciling and various mark-making techniques give color depth and texture to her surfaces.
Growing up in Temple City, California, Kay received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Cal State University Long Beach and her Master’s degree from Cal State University, Dominguez Hills. During her tenure as a high school art instructor, Kay grew her professional art career exhibiting work in galleries and participating and volunteering in community art events. In addition, she teaches painting for adults at her home studio. Kay also gains inspiration and enjoys the culture of the art community in San Miguel de Allende, spending time there as often as possible. Her home and studio are in Ventura, California.
